About Thought Blog

We spend a lot of time working and playing, but we often don’t place enough emphasis on thought. It’s good to explore thoughts and give them more exposure, even if they’re contestable. Thoughts are often transient when they deserve to be crystalised. We should do a better job of celebrating independent thought.

In this blog, we strive to present thoughts worthy of contemplation in an original and creative way. Each headline is a thought. If the thought is unattributed, it is the author’s own.

Meet the authors:

Hamish McKenzie (blog handle: ‘hamishmck’) is a Baltimore-based freelance journalist who writes about pop culture, social issues, drug issues, and whatever else seems important. Prior to a four-year stint in Hong Kong, he did a Master’s degree in journalism in Canada and studied English at the University of Otago, New Zealand, where he was once proud editor of the student magazine, Critic. He created Thought Blog.

Snoblind consists of two unremarkable Hong Kong office jockeys who write and perform trip-hop, down-tempo and a hint of post-rock electronica. During live performances, Snoblind are more concerned about the music sounding good than members looking good. Snoblind’s music can be downloaded at www.snoblind.com and snoblind.bandcamp.com.

Swangsta is an American-Chinese-Texan who grew up in Saudi Arabia, Germany, New York, New Jersey, and Virginia, and who stopped by Texas again on her way to Baltimore, MD to study law at the University of Maryland. In 29 years of life, she has worked as a paralegal, done some writing, consumed an embarrassing amount of canned cheese, and still can’t find her way around her hometown. Listen to her blip.fm station here; follow her blog here; or tweet your love here.

Ben McCarthy (blog handle: ‘benjaminmc’) was born and raised in Australia, lived in London for a few years, and is now based in Hong Kong as an industrial designer. Ben’s design mind is characterised by simple approaches to complex issues. Having been involved in bands for much of the last decade, the same can be said for his approach to music. See Ben’s website here and his band’s here.

Simon Bratt (blog handle: ‘Simon’) was born in 1979 and grew up in Wellington, New Zealand. Due to a lack of imagination he studied law, economics and finance and for the next six years slaved himself to the world of finance, which eventually brought him to Hong Kong. In early 2010, he realised finance wasn’t for him and set about rediscovering himself as a writer, designer, game developer, and general technology enthusiast. He has since returned to the corporate fold with a job in Wellington, New Zealand.

Kelly Pendergrast is a San Francisco-based video maker, film programmer, and born time-waster. Born and raised in New Zealand, she spent a weird few years in San Diego completing an MFA, before heading North to the Bay Area bubble of liberalism, fog, and foggy liberalism. Kelly is now gainfully employed editing videos for a non-profit, and un-gainfully employed at Artists’ Television Access, where she forces experimental film on an oft-confused viewing audience.
